Watermelons have been a great fruit to eat in the summer, but it certainly does not stop you from taking it up in the winter. Watermelons are one of the few fruits that give you a wide variety of vitamin benefits. In any given watermelon, you will find vitamin A, B, and C. In terms of vitamin B, there are certain complexes, such as B1, B3, B5 and B6. These are just broken down levels of vitamin B, which also contribute to your overall health factor. The fruit itself is low in fat, and gives us the energy we need. If you understand the role that sugar content plays in the body, you’ll know that eating lots of watermelons will give you a lot of energy in the form of ATP. How Many Calories Are in Watermelon?
The calories in watermelon will vary depending on the portion you are eating. Beginning with the smallest portion of 100grams, we see
that it gives us 30 calories. Now, if you really think about it, one slice of watermelon is usually more than 100grams. To make it fair, we have assumed that the average person eats one cup filled with diced up watermelons. If this is the case with you, the serving size is about 150grams, and gives you an average of 46 calories. The amount may seem lower than what you expected, but it is true. Unlike other fruits, watermelons don’t usually give us tons of calories if we are eating it in portions. If you are the type that likes to have more than a small slice of watermelon (like half of the melon or so), then you may be a little surprised by the total number of calories that you intake!
What About the Entire Watermelon?
An entire watermelon, which weighs around three to four kilograms, will have anywhere from 1300 to 1400 calories. Now, this is certainly a lot, as it contains nearly half of a person’s recommended daily calorie intake. Going back to portion sizes, if you are the kind of person that eats at least half a watermelon, you know exactly what to expect in terms of overall calorie intake. Apart from calorie content, watermelons have 0.2grams of fat, 1.2mg of sodium, 136.6mg of potassium and 9.2 grams of carbohydrates per serving of 120grams. The fruit itself has a lot of water content, which is simply watermelon juice being expelled from the pores of the fruit. The richness of a watermelon fruit lies in the total water content of the fruit itself, as that is what has the nutrients we need.
Watermelon and Kids
Watermelons aren’t a major deal in the recipe business, as you don’t see many recipes that use watermelons. However, if you like having fun with the kids, you could certainly try some fun drinks with the use of watermelons. Simply squeeze out the juice, add some water and sugar and you have a great summer drink. As you prefer, you could even leave chunks of watermelon in the drink to give it more natural flavouring or use as a snack for during the day.
